Hotel Felix -a relaxing and contemporary oasis in the hubbub of this historic town.
Nestled in a road in Cambridge, only a brief walk from town centre is Hotel Felix. Following its conception as a Victiorian Villa in 1852, it was only in 2002 this historical building was built to become Cambridge’s first four star boutique Hotel.
This renovation found many of its original period features being restored, whilst also being married with splashes of colour and modern design. Relaxing, comforting and quirky, it really is a home away from your home.
The room
We stayed in one of the suites, located on the ground floor of the Resort. Bright, airy and full of character, this was a package unlike any other. Having a generous offering of books large beamed ceilings and a television in the bathroom was considered. The king-size bed was very comfortable with duck down duvets and Egyptian cotton bed linen.
This Hotel offers it if there ever was pretense for running and leaping on the bed movie-style.
The room perfectly encapsulates a feeling of opulent simplicity, exuding charm and luxurious yet steering well clear of any pretentiousness.
A certain 10/10 sleep for anyone.
Dinner
Dinner is held in the Graffiti restaurant; this room reflects. The area is modern, fresh and undeniably cosy, creating a area to enjoy your food whilst also feeling at home.
Large windows overlook the south facing patio and gardens, offering a gorgeous view whilst you’re enjoying dinner, afternoon tea or a breakfast.
Whilst the weather was relatively warm throughout our stay, there’s an open flame in the center of the restaurant which can bring a lick of warmth and comfort to the space in gloomier days. The restaurant is famous for its British cooking with a Mediterranean twist bringing those far and wide, meaning reservations are advisable.
For starters I opted for ‘rocket salad, Mediterranean vegetables and Parma Ham. Total of flavours and presented beautifully, this is really an ideal dish. Filling enough without inducing me to bloat to whet my palette for the primary course, this is a option. My partner picked calamari (his favourite- thus meaning he had lots of additional calamari dishes to compare to) and announced it as one of the best calamari starters he had ever tried. The portion was from the kitchen of a size, fresh and hot.
I had an absolutely delicious chicken with potato and chicken jus. The chicken was tender and succulent, the potato crispy on the outside and deliciously fluffy on the inside and the chicken jus. My partner opted for a different favorite of his- Pork belly. Pork’s Slow Cooked Belly was accompanied by shallot Purée potato, and Pommery mustard Jus. Again, it was presented looked delicious and tasted even better. The meat was cooked perfectly and the excess side of chips he ordered were delicious (even though we could not quite finish them!)
I’m warning you now, if you aren’t a dessert person, visiting the Graffiti restaurant means that may well alter.
I opted for the chocolate brownie- if I’d used the phrase ‘death’ I take it back at this time, for Graffiti showed me what it felt like. And it was paradise.
Sweet and with deliciously creamy undertones, this really is really a pudding.
Location
Location is a powerful point for Hotel Felix. Inspired by beautiful gardens and in the building’s calm hubbub, it’s easy to forget the bustling city of Cambridge is only a short journey away. We drove into the centre (it seem roughly ten minutes and was quite easy to find) but if you fancy a walk it will take roughly 25 minutes to half an hour- the Resort were great at advising us the finest paths and even printed us a map. The historic town is worth a visit- why not look round one of the University campuses or take a boat river across the river Cam?
Contemporary, clean this Resort is ideal for a City break.
