When it comes to booking a vacation to Portugal the destination which often springs to mind is the Algarve. Flocks of pasty Brits head there in the summertime with flamingo rubber rings and sun cream in tow, looking for sun, sea and cocktails rather than overly fussed about where they get it. But what if there were so much more to the nation than that? And there is.
For Portugal is made up for packed beaches and 1 mojitos. This I discovered on my recent trip.
I flew over with Harness Portugal, an easy and effortless flight which took just over 2 hours. It is worth upgrading as legroom is received by you and plug points to your apparatus.
Closely neighboured to Spain, Porto is reminiscent of its counterpart with its temperate climate, lush trees swelled with the relaxed vibe along with fruit to the atmosphere. Porto nevertheless feels more unfinished. A edge is to the city where cobbled streets harbour trades and boutiques, restaurants cook fish on open grills outside their doors and trams trundle up and down the narrow roads. It is a city steeped with charm, although there aren’t an mass of monuments and historical buildings to view.
(make sure you look at our Lello — a library which became famous for its inspiration behind portions of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter.)
The city, as well as being renowned for its Port (we’ll get to that in a little) also has an architecture that’s to be honored. Porto is decorated from head to tie in tiles — geometric reds, faded sun yellow florals, blues. It is further proof. It is a town that is quaint- nicknamed the little sister of Lisbon — but by no means submissive. It is happy to recline back, satisfied with its offerings and remain a bit of a secret. For that is one of the charms of this city, it still feels relatively undiscovered. There are just a few chains here (the fact a Starbucks recently opened on one of those roads in the primary city was met with an outrage) and shops are usually family run. There are plenty of bakeries (promoting the famous Portuguese custard tarts) and conventional shops sitting shoulder to shoulder with more modern openings — entrepreneurs enticed by the reduced rent prices and flourishing chances the city has to offer.
It’s quickly becoming famed for its foodie scene. Whilst already known as the inventor of white port (and also pink port — attempt with one-part port and two components tonic water) it is also known for its delicious seafood (try Os Lusiadas for exceptional quality fish) and olive oil.)
This create and harvest is due to its accessibility to of the elements — its climate make a perfect mix for expansion and its mountains lead to waters. To be able to get a real taste of this harvest is of Porto, be certain to head to Duoro Valley on your visit.
There is a hotel called Monverde that supplies the most perspectives of its functional vineyard where you can tap the button and watch the electric blinds increase to the sight of hundreds of pickers of harvest, sun. The air in the valley herbs, tinged with the odor of crushed grapes and is flavorful and crisp.
If you’re looking to acquire more stuck on your own, head to Quinta de Pacheca (Wine House Hotel) where, when the season is at harvest, it is possible to try your own hand in choosing the grapes under the heady Portuguese sunlight. This is followed to crush them with your feet — a traditional Portuguese tradition accompanied by musicians. This can be followed with a delicious local lunch.
A tablecloth holds hot breads dusted with a layer of bread, glittering olive oils and balsamic vinegar and glass swelling with all the neighborhood wine. It is possible to feast on their local traditional dishes such as francesinha (a Portuguese sandwich made from ham, bread, sausage and melted cheese and coated in hot tomato sauce) and Leite crème (a Portuguese take on a crème brulee).
Another hotel to Keep in the Duoro Valley is the Six Senses. One of the most beautiful Hotels I have ever seen it has everything from a spa, shop, restaurants, bars and library to activities like fragrance making and wine tasting. It’s a wonderful spot to stay, or just drop in for dinner or coffee when in the area to soak in the views and atmosphere.

Food wise, if you are looking for somewhere a little more from the city center, Rib is a foodie power to be reckoned with. It’s a grill which specialises in fine cuts of beef and right by the waterfront it is an ideal spot for watching the world go by as you sip on sample fine food and wine, as the name suggests. The Portuguese civilization is focused on meals — for someone is a sin that was large here, so parts are never pitiful. Dishes are packed with flavours and colors. As they are placed in front of you, drizzled with olive oil or sprinkled with chilli , still sizzling. They make it obvious — food isn’t something they take and it is all the better for this.
For dining a trip are DOP and DOC — both opened by of Chef Rui Paula. DOC is in DOP from town centre and the Duoro Valley. They aim to supply you with incursions into Portuguese cuisine’s classics.
The Port expertise does not reside in the valley, Taylor’s port house in the center is well worth a visit for trying some yummy samples as well as locating Port’s history. It is a destination which has quickly become famous and also to make an afternoon of sampling their ports is spent. And the Port is of such high quality here it is rare you wake up hungover (unless you’ve really overindulged). It is criminal to remain in bed in such a city and with sunlight strong in the skies it won’t require much persuasion to drag yourself 43, if you should wake up with a bit of a sore head.
For there is simply so much to see. Regardless of which side street you find yourself drifting down or open and relax with a picnic there’s life on all corners. It buzzes with action and with lifetime, yet it is in no way stifling like cities. It keeps air and the authenticity of a town, marrying it. When you’ve seen all you can by land (or want a different approach to find the city) we advise that you hop aboard one of the town cruise river ships. These tours last for fifty minutes and provide views of the towns dazzling landscape, taking you under the bridges of Porto.
Hotel Teatro is a must, if you’re looking for someplace to stay in the city center. A design Hotel made to seem like an old theater, it quirkiness and exudes personality, with moody lighting, velvet drapes and a reception which resembles a box office. It is a great alternative and a Resort that will make your stay that bit more memorable. It is within walking distance of the centre that is very so as it’s unique.
Porto is a destination which is magical. It bursting to be told and exists for you. It is one of those rare and distinctive cities that captures a part of you and you know you may return. For how can you not? The wine the food, the port, the views, the sea air and the charm of the buildings all combine to create a destination of unrefined perfection. It is slight rugged and imperfect border adds personality and proves to you it’s real. We can not wait to return…
