Flying into the newly established route to the little yet mightily efficient Kalamata Airport, actually named following the modern day father of this area of Messenia, Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos, we started our journey to the Peloponnese, a scenic region in South West Mainland Greece transformed into the fertile and flourishing retreat that it’s today — the land of Costa Navarino.
It was a joy to be among the very first to experience British Airways fresh international charter flight to the Peloponnese, their munificent service from couch to landing is always a joy to have. British Airways delivered into us such gratifying fashion as constantly fulfilling of your needs and desires allowing one to enjoy their air travel.
Kalamata airport is a quaint stamp on the envelope of the Peloponnese and a fine introduction to the region. It’s single building of humble genius — a stroke of modesty in an aeronautical world of behemoth buildings and hangers that are big enough to visitors the planes throughout the gates , solitary passport check bag collection carousel and a terminal. And to me, ignorant in my adventure of charter airports of anything other: landing on the minimum runway strip and drifting to the coming gate, it was quite a revelation to behold such a simple and unembellished scene as this singularity, Kalamata airport did genuinely lend you to wonder why other airports don’t heed this case. It is adorable.
Just an hour or so drive to our Greek Vista (when compared with what could have been another 3 hour journey time on the prior route landing in Athens) it had been of little wonder why British Airways took a closer course into the region of Messenia and lay to roost in this a fitting setting. The like for like was experienced at the elegant classicality of Greek hospitality and the British, a manner of politeness and hospitality which runs through the veins of the two civilisations and cultures.
To study Classics is study ancient Greek History and Philosophy mingled with a ripple of Mythology, and also the scenes you set in your imagination of this Greek background is precisely the vision of Messenia; so far as my experience of Greece goes — this being my first trip — it turned into a area that exuded an air of familiar antiquity. Seeing Voidokilia Beach, the local beach, is in itself a walk through time, with ruins of a Frankish castle, Old Navarino, brimming the very top of the rocky peaks that are inimical that surround the region. The very namesake of this epic bay loosely translating to cow’s stomach, dubbed such to the aesthetic omega shape of the bay and eluding into the lore of Nestor’s cave, dug into the jagged cliff border on the West perimeter of the bay where, according to fantasy, Hermes had hidden the stolen cows of Apollo.
This Greek setting, already rich with all the gist of ancient epic, Voidokilia shore, Homer’s “sandy Pylos”, also played host to cultural legend of King Nestor discovering, welcoming and adapting Telemachus, son of Odysseus, and did so without want or want to inquire who he had been for three days whilst he had been in his care, illuminating a legacy of the Messenian people to deliver unconditional Greek hospitality.
800 years on, Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos took cultivated and origin the Messenian landscape into the Costa Navarino complicated: a renewable eco-system in the sense of creating a thriving and wealthy system and in a feeling of and market. Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos founded Costa Navarino to deliver prosperity of business with development of a new agriculture by spoonful of trees that were aged, to the area, a region with the ideal climate for orchards of such. The Polopenese is a pure environment which used to sponsor plantations for a raisin commerceKalamata Olive Orchard started and Costa Navarino Resort started. With the development of Costa Navarino 2500 people have become used and 80 percent of that are indigenous to Messinia: Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos took excellent investment into this, his hometown area, to assist inject some life and give something back to Messinia — and that he has certainly attained. Now his loved ones and children are upholding his legacy, and his dream was realised by Constantakopoulos with the opening of The Westin Hotel and village complex in 2011 and so are putting great effort to the complex.
With 6 golfing Costa Navarino provides a great cross country and is the warm weather climate to host a hole that is spectacular. And there is still planned for the mecca — almost a mini city providing you your every demand. It’s a rebirth of an historically improved area, bringing back prestige and life to the vineyard region.
Upon a guided bicycle tour of from our Hotel, The Westin, to Voidokilia Beach we could visit Navarino Dunes, a superbly resort’s scape, hosting The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort and The Westin Resort, Costa Navarino. Inspired by older mansions and rural houses, clusters of low-rise villas have been carved into the landscape with local design components and native rock, blending with all the landscape that was reddish in a perfect balance — fitting.
It’s important to also note that the development of a strategy that is grand is of organic epic proportions, ensuring that this land’s integrity goes unspoilt by honor natural habitat , maintaining respect and production. Behind Voidokilia Beach is a flat water plain of still in property lakes — and area which plays host to a lot of species of birds since the most Southerly rest stop in their migration North: Costa Navarino has been sure to not inhibit this natural eco system and wealth of indigenous wildlife.
The Westin Space includes the same as any village in Greece — a fit for everybody, a stadium. Again an ancient tradition honoured in this modern day saga. With this atmosphere of authenticity it does not feel young or fresh but time honoured and grand, particularly sitting with cocktail in hand at the 1827 pub overlooking the traditional of feel in each detail and the beauty of the architecture.
As a portion of our excursions we were welcomed into two lovely ladies little cabin on a hill simply touching an impressive golfing ground, they had been Greek through and though, talking hardly any English, but conveyed with smiles as they taught us how to make pasta. Wow was their cooking striking, but what really won me over was the sharing of frivolity in traditional Greek dance’s form — and it is harder than it looks in you. We danced to many legends! It had been the highlight of my trip — an intimate gathering of strangers — it was like we had been introduced into the genuine meaning of love — which is love for guest, your comrade and host.
Messenian, Greek hospitality is the best service one could ask for — always delivered with a smile and generous and sincere. Then there isn’t a reason than to experience this beautiful etiquette, should you will need some more cause to go to this section of Greece.
From cocktails and golfing; to deluxe premier spa therapies*; hiking; biking; swimmingpool, and literally everything else in-between, Costa Navarino has everything (such as a bowling alley). And best saved for last is for the exceptional dining experiences in the all brilliant half a dozen restaurants surrounding the complex: truly notable was Da Luigi with meals which you can inform both dining together with the main menu and by the star quality menu served upstairs, that this kitchen is ran by a Michelin star chef out of Rome. Of note was obviously Flame overlooking a wonderful horizon — a really exquisite dining area, but my definitive favourite restaurant of Costa Navarino must be Barbouni Beach Restaurant: Costa Navarino has permission to build 30m from shore, enabling such a spectacular beach setting to enjoy the beautifully fitting cuisine of yummy sea-food prepared with fervour and delicacy; genuinely amazing food, amazing vibe and my number one daily chill out zone with my heart’s desire of great food and beverage neighbouring my sun bed.
*Anazoe Spa is a brilliant must visit if of an standard, Spa, which I would say. With sensational relaxing remedies based on ancient Greek practices, and a Spa bath area with its own Salt Rich Pool — a mini Black Sea, you need look no further for an eventual cleansing and revitalising and Zen zone, the spa’s unique oleotherapy remedies were discovered at Nestor’s Palace and date back to times of Homer.
Oh and I have not even begun to mention the wine. Even the White, Rose and Red 1827 Signature wines are extremely spectacular — I’d understand for I drank a few of all daily and or night, without one compromise (perhaps not a hangover) just pure wine bliss.
Costa Navarino is the ideal setting for whatever and ready for all.
My authentic vestige of the whole Navarino nirvana, after making quick work of indulging in my Kalamata Extra Virgin Olive Oil, isn’t merely the lingering but very real tan and smile lines staying from enjoying the warm weather and lavishing in good food and wine, and delighting in their ample source. Nor is it only the remembrance of an ancient potency to the region and the revival of decency in every facet of the word. No, what I’ve gained from this whole journey is a very well-intentioned penchant for Kalamata Olive Tapenade — A totally amazing treat for breakfast lunch or dinner (and) dinner — I found it at our everyday buffet breakfasts with variety more than you can imagine, it was buffet of amazing create — The olive tapenade was the best thing I have found since Vegan Glazed Donuts! But wow olive tapenade is now an shopping list thing — this excursion to the Peloponesse has really changed my life.
Sitting here thinking of my experience of the place, and the image that stays in my mind is a picture in groves of olive trees that are aged, growing in a climate that is special and in an Earthy property. I believe travelling the world is about sensing the rhythm of this weather cycle and ecosystem of the which share and learning of where you are, the area. And for me personally, this part of the Mediterranean, of the world, is a climate that has yielded such a lush and vibrant scene. Costa Navarino feels as old as the trees it sparks, the location feels created, and it’s as if Messenia is stage for it and a organic and natural home, a resuscitation of life back to a sensationally, picturesque and thriving vista that is potent.
I haven’t known a place to be stimulating, it’s the Greek and Medditarrenean destination to date. Let yourself walk through time and experience the feel of the wise and historical wisteria, a feeling of a scape that has witnessed histories classic proportions of changing scenes throughout the 38, and a scope. It is the same way I look at trees and feel their wisdom and age, however there is nothing more solid than stone, along with the red dust of Messenia tells epic chronicles of time, together with Costa Navarino.
Bask in the course and finesse of this Costa Navarino of Messeniahe has unearthed a paragon: authentic Greece classic.
