We recently set sail around the Caribbean with P&O Cruises on a seven night tour, giving us a opportunity to experience not only the miracles on the boat, but also people off of it. Our love affair with cruising well and truly begun.
Read — why cruising Isn’t just for the elderly generations
With the boat itself being such a huge part of your vacation, it’s easy to forget the true reason you’re cruising- to see new countries, experience new cultures and broaden your travel horizons.
We were taken by our Caribbean tour to six astounding islands — Barbados, Aruba, Curacao, Grenada, St Vincent and St Lucia. We opted to reserve a tour on every island during P&O Cruises themselves. Whilst you are free to explore the island yourself, or reserve an independent tour, we wanted. If for any reason that the excursion is late, if it is booked through P&O the boat will await you. If you’re on an independent tour and are back, it might wind up with you having to make your own approach to catch up with the ship.
We didn’t partake in excursions in Barbados or St Lucia as those were our embarkation and disembarkation days and meant we were stretched for time, but booked something for every one of the other four islands.
Here’s our roundup of the trips we went on…
1Aruba
Sights and beach
Book here — http://www.pocruises.com/cruise-destinations/aruba-cruises/
The Aruba sights and beach excursion is the perfect choice to explore the island, visit hidden locations and round it off with a sunbathe at one of the best beaches in the world. The tour commenced at 8:30am — a early one, but was well worthwhile. We had been taken to find the famous all-natural bridge, an area of the island that is far from the typical vision of that the island — the sea was more choppy and also the shore rocky rather than sandy. It’s still a intriguing and favorite milestone to see despite the bridge having fallen into the sea in 2005. This was followed by a drive to Aruba’s oldest lighthouse, a pit stop offering views of the island. Not only was this a opportunity to see an area you would have discovered, but also the sights of this island.
The last stop on the tour was Aruba’s Eagle shore — voted one of the top beaches on the planet. It’s easy to see why. With waters that are soft sands, pristine and clean it seems like paradise on earth. There are numerous shaded areas, loungers and a host of watersports on offer. This excursion is well worth it for the beach alone (and if you are lucky you might even spot a sea turtle!)
TwoCuracao
Curacao beach break
Book here — http://www.pocruises.com/cruise-destinations/curacao-cruises/
Curacao was one of my favorite islands we visited, largely as a result of the brightly colored buildings and heavy dutch influence. We picked for the Curacao beach break excursion, which provided a coach tour of the island, a tour of a rum distillery after which time at Mambo shore. The rum distillery was a stop that is brief but enlightening, together with the opportunity to sample some of the drink that is renowned at the conclusion. Mambo shore was the real highlight, yet. Being a shore, it’s well protected from the ocean swells and ideal for relaxing or snowboarding. There are a range of places to catch a bite to eat (their Panini’s are delicious!) And you can either relax on a sun lounger that is free or pay a bit more for a lavish one.
3Grenada
Lobster, champagne and Walk tour
Book here — http://www.pocruises.com/cruise-destinations/grenada-cruises/
We opted for the lobster, champagne and sail excursion, deciding to (quite literally) push the boat out a little for this one. A coach picked us up from the boat and we were taken to the jetty, where we stumbled aboard a catamaran. We made a stop for an underwater sculpture park in which we had the chance to snorkel (or stay aboard and sunbathe) before going into Hog Island. The sea was rather rough in certain parts (but super fun!) And we have the chance to view Grenada from sea kept relatively near the shore.
Hog Island itself is breathtakingly beautiful and does the tricky task of exceeding expectations from travel brochures. It’s near enough a deserted island and feels special. We came to crabs scuttling across the white sands the smells of the sights of palm trees, a glass of champagne and lobster sizzling on a BBQ and a hammock. Pure paradise. There is plenty of time to relax on the island and enjoy a tasty BBQ before heading back on the ship to beach — this is a true.
4St Vincent
Waterfall and coast
Novel here — http://www.pocruises.com/cruise-destinations/st-vincent-cruises/
Our final excursion during our cruise was among the best. We chose to experience St Vincent from land and sea and it was packed with so much to finish, the excursion superbly executed. We began the day on a catamaran (with half of the group heading on coach), being told that the foundation of St Vincent as we sped past the lush mountainous terrain, the Caribbean sun beating down and tender salt spray in our faces. Our first pit stop was to a sand beach for a spot of tranquility and snorkelling, before drifting beyond the islands famed bat cave. Following this, we got the opportunity to explore the Pirates of the place and disembarked the ship — this was a addition and there were lots of great photo stops! The groups then changed- people who’d taken catamaran. Our coach team was taken to St Vincent Dark View Falls, a park that takes you to one of the Islands most gorgeous waterfalls. A brief 15 minute walk from the car park and beautiful greenery, where the waterfall is located cross a pure bamboo bridge and shades you.
The excursion rounded up with a buffet dinner back at the waterside before being pushed back to the boat. The drive back was also a highlight for it showed the Caribbean’s real side. We drove snaking round mountaneous arenas, villages and towns, past homes and steep bends. School children waved us by as we passed and sailors smiled.
This tour proved to be a real highlight of the entire cruise and perfect to observe the other side of the Caribbean away from the perfected beaches.
There are so many activities and excursions available when cruising, it’s essential to get the one which’s right for you.
Top hints:
- Check if it is a full day or half day. You may want to get back for a specific activity on board check the excursion is before you book or to spend some time checking the island.
- Consider what you want and find an excursion that is ideal for you. Whether looking for a beach trip, water sports or a trek there is something for all kinds of tastes and fitness levels.
- Packs water — sometimes the trips can mean you’re in the sun for extended intervals and need to stay hydrated.
- Assess exactly what you want to bring with you. Some require you to wear clothing and bring a towel, others require sensible footwear. Check before you venture out to prevent missing out on anything
- Assess the beginning time of your excursion — you do not want to miss it because of a lie in!
- Don’t forget suncream! The hours can mean you are vulnerable to burning and there might not be a place for you to buy lotion whenever you’re out.
